Union Station Washington DC

Description:  Washington Union Station is both a major railway station and an important civic gateway to the American capital. Its monumental architecture, broad streets and formal surroundings create a very different character from the busy commercial stations of other cities. In drawing it, I was interested in the relationship between the station and the city around it — the streets, traffic, people and open spaces that connect the building to Washington. The aerial view allowed me to bring these elements together, showing the station not simply as a transportation building, but as part of the larger urban experience of arriving in the capital.
