Gare de Lyon, Paris

Description:  Gare de Lyon is one of Paris’s great railway stations, combining a monumental historic façade with the intense movement of trains, buses, cars and people around it. In drawing the station, I was especially interested in the way the railway becomes woven into the surrounding city. The streets, traffic and buildings create a constantly changing pattern around the station, while the historic architecture provides a strong visual anchor. From above, these different layers come together in a single composition. I wanted the drawing to convey both the grandeur of Gare de Lyon and the everyday energy of this important Parisian crossroads.
